When Rompetrol were looking for a wind turbine that was designed for the offshore winter conditions of the Black Sea, they turned to the Leading Edge LE-v150 for a turbine that could survive the harsh winters found in that part of the world.
Rompetrol, a Romanian oil company, operate an Offshore Crude Oil Transfer Terminal with a Single Point Mooring (SPM) Buoy 8.5 km offshore the Romanian coast in the Black Sea.
We chose the LE-v150 because it is designed for Arctic conditions – strong winds and low temperatures. As the buoy is usually unmanned, reliability was key for us. We needed a turbine that could go on running with the minimum of maintenanceDenis Feizi, Offshore Maintenance Supervisor, Rompetrol
The Rompetrol SPM Buoy was commissioned in 2008 and the electrical equipment installed on the terminal at that point were powered by a solar panel array system. Over the past two years additional equipment was installed on the Buoy – a weather station and video cameras. To meet this new power demand, Rompetrol installed additional solar panels, wind turbines and a set of 12 2V gel batteries.
“We found the turbines easy to mount and have three mounted on each of the masts. The high quality technical staff at Leading Edge helped me to find the best configuration for this application and I always received a prompt response to any questions raised,” Denis concluded.
“After one winter the turbines are performing according to expectations, without any mechanical problem or electric components failure.”
